SOMNANBIL

(L'enfant du pays), was born in Guadeloupe. He grew up in Basse-Terre on a leeward coast, in a rural environment where resourcefulness and recourse to the imaginary are a matter of survival. It was by following his father to Léwoz evenings that he discovered the gwo-ka and the drum. From then on, he developed an obsession for this music and listened to vinyls by artists such as Ti-sélès, Esnard Boidur, Robert Loison, Cergius Geoffroy, Chaben, Anzala, Michel Laurent.

At the age of 16, he met Rospard babya master of the tambouyé, thanks to whom he entered the school Sòl- bòkò which included other musicians such as Guy Rospard (Kaya), Léonard, Jean-Pierre Fips. Sòmnanbil takes part in (funeral) wakes, important moments in Guadeloupean culture where the léwoz are played.

It takes part in a number of cultural events, including the Sainte-Anne, à Saint-Vincent, Antigua, Marie-Galante, les Saintes. From that moment on, he became fully involved in gwo ka, taking part in various drumming and dance workshops under the guidance of a master, who introduced him to the rhythms, jédimos (wordplay), drum-making and crafts associated with gwo-ka.

In 1996, after his military service, he returned to his native Guadeloupe and joined various bands as a tambouyé (drummer): Mon chi ka, Lakala, Gadéka, Voukoum, Kaoka. It was at this time that he first came to the attention of the public, building up a reputation for himself locally.

In 1999, after several trips between Guadeloupe and mainland France with the group Zakacia
he moved permanently to the Paris region, where he quickly became involved in the gwo-ka scene, heading up the KA drum section of the association Bay lanmen (Seine Saint-Denis).

In 2001, he met, Biloute throughEnriko Aigue. This relationship has given rise to genuine collaboration within the group. Jenn ki ka.

On the strength of its experience, Sòm- nanbilHe is actively involved in the production of a number of albums, takes part in a number of festivals and accompanies many musicians in traditional and modern gwo-ka projects. He has performed with Franck Nicolas, Léwòz ka fraternité, Erik Negrit, Carine Gotion, Adan ka

, Sartana, José Bellerose, Erik Négit, Patrick Vincent, Fred Epaminondas.

Supporting member of the association Nou Ka Bayto pass on the gwo-kaHe also taught "Boulagèl" (rhythmic onomatopoeia used to replace the drum, which was banned during slavery), singing and Ka drumming.

In 2008, his work and investment in the gwo-ka are rewarded in the documentary The call of the Drum directed by Franck Salin (broadcast at the Festival Vibrations Caraïbes, at the Maison des Cultures du Monde, Saint-Anne Gwo-ka Festival, Trace TVGuadeloupe and Martinique TV channels).

Sòmnanbil is an all-round artist, a tambouyé, singer and gwo-ka dancer who also performs as an actor in plays. He plays the role of assistant to the "Commandeur" and coordinates all the light percussion and sound effects in the dramatic play Adélaïde (2008, written by Solal Valentindirected by Dominik Bernard).

In 2014 he appeared with Compagnie Boukousou in the play "Waka douvan jou".
